Event — Publish and be Damned at Barbican

A special appearance from Publish and be Damned publishing fair, featuring some of the very best independent and DIY publications, books and magazines made by artists and print enthusiasts, opens tonight at Barbican Art Gallery

Publish and be Damned was founded in 2004 by Kit Hammonds and Emily Pethick. Looking at the range of artists working with self-published media, primarily in magazine, journal, fanzines and periodicals the first installment of the fair was as much a convention or swap meet as marketing opportunity, and was intended to establish an informal distribution network. In parallel an exhibition at Cubitt gallery established a public library for publishing outside the mainstream.

Since, Publish and be Damned has continued through demand for the fair and invitations to present the library internationally. Sarah McCrory, Joe Scotland and Kate Phillimore have all been involved in continuing our activities.

In 2009 Publish and be Damned became a members organisation providing opportunities for its members to present their work as well as a online database and discussion forum, and a quarterly magazine ‘The Damned’.
